Acoustic Reduction Technology

About this task

Use ART, the Acoustic Reduction Imaging Option, to reduce gradient noise for a quieter scan on wide bore MR scanners. It is ideal for noise sensitive patients such as pediatric patients or patients with whom you must communicate through out the acquisition. Acoustic Noise Technology Option protocols are available for routine neuro (pediatric and adult), spine and upper and lower extremity.

  • The scan user interface ART tab only appears if you have purchased the Silent Neuro Package .

  • There are two reduction levels:
    • Moderate reduces the noise with some loss of resolution.
    • High reduces the noise more and loses more resolution in comparison to Moderate.
  • ART is compatible with all scan modes.
  • Always provide hearing protection.
  • Use ART with GE protocols that include ART as an Imaging Option. The image quality and scan time of these protocols are optimized for ART.
  • Note: that the Silenz one-click application is not compatible with ART.
  • ART reduces noise at the expense of spatial resolution. Therefore, ART is not recommended for use with high spatial or temporal resolution scans. It is not recommended for cardiac and abdominal scans.
  • ART slightly increases scan time (longer minimum TR) and echo times.
  • ART with ASSET can result in image quality loss, particularly near susceptibility regions such as the sinus area.
  • ART with EPI scans results in compromised image quality, for example, increased distortion due to the increased echo space.
  • If artifacts are present on the ART images, repeat the scan with ART off.

    NumberDescription
1ART Imaging Option is turned off. The scan time is 1:41.
2ART Imaging Option is set to Moderate. The scan time is 2:06.
3ART Imaging Option is set to High. The scan time is 2:24.
