Synthetic DWI scan protocol considerations

Synthetic DWI is commercially known as MAGiC DWI.

Consider these tradeoffs as you change scan parameters for images that are post processed with Synthetic DWI application.

  • As NEX increases, scan time increases and SNR of the acquired DWI increases. Synthetic DWI image quality image depends on the acquired DWI image. Changing the scan parameter to increase SNR, described in Synthetic DWI scan procedure topic, is also consideration to improve the SNR of synthetic DWI image.
  • Increasing NEX has an added benefit of reducing artifacts caused by motion, especially for navigated or respiratory triggered acquisitions.
  • Generally, the prescription of the acquired and synthetic b-values should be close to each other to improve synthetic DWI image quality.
  • Generally, the prescription of a wider range of acquired b-values improve synthetic DWI image quality.
  • For abdominal and pelvic scans, prescription of 2 or more b-values, instead of prescription of 1 b-value with T2 image, improve synthetic DWI image quality.
